Mission and Purpose

Tax Indexing Project The Ohio Genealogical Society has partnered with FamilySearch to create an index of early Ohio tax records. These records are of great significance in family history research. An index of these records, linked to images of the actual records, will be an incredible resource. OGS is seeking volunteers to help with this important project. A great feature of this project is that the work comes to the volunteers via the Internet. Work can be done at any time of the day or night in the comfort of your own home. All volunteers need are a computer with an Internet connection, an ability to read handwriting from the 1800s, and a few hours per month. Batches are small (two or three pages) and take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Volunteers can work on as many or as few batches as they would like. The result of this project - an index of these tax records, linked to images of the actual records - will be very accurate, as each record is entered by two different people working independently and verified by a third person. The benefit to genealogists will be incredible. To participate in this exciting project, you will need to obtain a username and password from Amy Johnson Crow, Ohio Tax Project Moderator, at indexing@ogs.org. She is also available to answer questions about the project. More information can be found at www.FamilySearchIndexing.org and clicking on the Projects tab. Note to volunteers: click here for additional help on determining tax type. |
