4th Annual OGS Genealogy Librarians' Seminar

OGS Library, Mansfield

Fees: $15.00 for seminar; $10.00 for box lunch if desired. Free parking and free library admittance.

Please email Tom Neel at tneel@ogs.org for a box lunch card and additional information. Please try to register by October 9th although we can accept a few at the last minute.

  • Welcome - Thomas Stephen Neel, OGS Library Director, and Bvenitta Williams, Genealogical Librarians' Seminar Chair
9:45am-10:45am
  • Decisions for the Local History Room Archivist - Gwen Mayer, Archivist at the Hudson Library, will explore how far a librarian should go in adding non-book items to the local history room and the additional paperwork, processing knowledge, and environmental concerns that this might entail.
11:00am-12:00pm
  • Introduction to Digital Projects - Angela O’Neal, Digital Projects Manager at the Ohio Historical Society, will give us an abbreviated version of her Digital Projects workshop and will give us some advanced information on a new program for Ohio Memory.
12:00pm-1:00pm
  • Lunch (Box lunch or nearby restaurant)

  • How They Lived: Social History and Genealogical Research - Judy James of Akron-Summit Public Library advises us how important it is to get genealogy patrons to study more than just names and dates.

Mini-Topics in the Hist/Gen Community - We invite you to give a 5-10 minute presentation to the group on some special aspect of your genealogical work at the library that you would like to share. Please contact OGS to schedule your topic. Those scheduled so far include:

  • Bvenitta Williams—What is most helpful to purchase in serving the African American community’s research needs?
  • Tom Neel— Having second thoughts about census records as the standard in genealogy again?
