About this Database

The Ohio Department of Health maintains a statewide index of births, divorces and marriages. These indexes were consolidated from the county probate records of Ohio’s 88 counties. Some of these indexes were obtained by the Ohio Genealogical Society. There are not complete. There are missing years and some years have missing entries.

The Ohio marriage index contains 1,974,897 marriage information between January 1, 1970 to December 31, 1990. The years 1972, 1974 and 1975 are incomplete while 1971 is missing.

To request marriage records, contact the county probate court.
To request divorce records, contact the county court of common pleas.
To request birth records, contact the city or county health department or the Ohio Department of Health.

Marriages 1788 to date are located in the Probate Court in the county where the marriage occurred. The Ohio Genealogical Society has published statewide indices for 1788 through 1830. The LDS web site – www.familysearch.org – is a good, but not complete, index of Ohio marriages. The Ohio Dept of Health maintains a statewide index to marriages 1944 to date.

Births and deaths in Ohio 1867 to 1908 are located in the Probate Court in the county where the event occurred. The Latter Day Saints (LDS) has filmed most of these and they may be used in their research centers. There is no statewide index. Deaths 1908 to 1953 have been transferred to the Ohio Historical Society. Copies may be obtained there and at the Akron-Summit Co Public Library from microfilmed copies at a very reasonable price. And index to part of this, 1913 to 1945, appears online at www.ohiohistory.org in the Library/Archives section. Deaths 1953 to date and births 1908 to date are located in the Ohio Dept of Health, Columbus. There are copies filed in local county health departments as well. Copies are unfortunately about $20.00 each. They are able to do searches, but there is no online or published index.
