SUMMARY:Kolping Cincinnati Genealogy – Using Maps in Genealogical Research by Dr. Tom Montgomery
DESCRIPTION:We will meet Sunday\, May 17 at 2:00 pm for an hour to review the updates and power of using digital maps in your family’s research. \nThe first part of the meeting will focus on Maps in your genealogical research. It is advisable to learn the location of your “home village” in order to facilitate most German ancestry research. A subtopic will be “Finding your Heimat” using this technology. We will compare Google Maps to Google Earth (using the two villages of my Weber family as an example) and learn to search “Germany” using both apps to locate your ancestors’ homes. \nGoogle Maps are fun to view and provide a perspective most useful in our research. Our forefathers would be amazed to see “Street View” of the old home place. Google Earth is the 3-D Master of the Universe. It is very useful for detailed geographical research with fine detailed satellite imagery. A new “favorite” is the Historical timeline. \nIf time permits\, a review of basic geography will cover the present-day German States and a look back into their historical regions and administrative divisions will be provided. This quick review will whet your appetite for “mapping” by looking at a few of the many online gazetteers and some of the best online historical maps\, but not in detail as these map sites are a whole different topic to separately review. \nHomework: THREE assignments\n1. Review the comparison table before attending our session in the following website link: https://gisgeography.com/google-earth-vs-google-maps/\n2. Download both Google Maps and Google Earth to your computer (and/or smartphone) before attending so that you can enjoy your own personal searches. Both Google Maps and Google Earth are free. You can login to Google on your computer to view digital maps and research Germany’s geography. https://libguides.brooklyn.cuny.edu/GIS/google_earth_maps\n3. Review the Side-by-Side Comparison video as it provides an understanding of the differences between the two programs. It is excellent! https://scrap.io/google-maps-vs-google-earth-differences-comparison-guide \nThis meeting will be “hybrid\,” being held live in the Kolping Cincinnati Klubhaus\, and online via Zoom. There is no cost to attend\, and all are welcome. Send an email to genealogy@kolpingcincinnati.com to acquire the Zoom link and reserve a spot. We look forward to seeing you. \nAlways check our website for the latest information:\nhttp://www.kolpingcincinnati.com/Genealogy/Genealogy.html

SUMMARY:Union County Chapter of OGS May Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Union County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society invites you to join us at 10 A. M. on Saturday\, May 9 for the program\, My Family and Indian Massacres. The presentation will be in meeting room “A” at the Marysville Public Library\, 231 S. Plum Street\, Marysville. (Elevator inside back door.) Our Marysville Municipal Court Judge\, Robert W. Parrott\, will be our speaker. Judge Parrott is also the President of the Union County Historical Society and life-long resident of Union County.\nIn researching one of his Union County family lines\, He has traced that family back to Massachusetts. He found that they were part of the expansion from the east coast settlements into the western lands of Massachusetts. Four generations of his direct line ancestors were killed in what was called at the time “Indian massacres.” Those took place in the late 1600s and early 1700s. He has wondered if anything might be found yet today concerning the “massacres.” He has spent several vacations travelling to New England in the fall to see what he could find about these “Indian massacres.” The talk will relate the story of his family being nearly wiped out by Indians resisting the expansion of European settlers and what still exists today concerning those events.\nThe event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Kolping Cincinnati Genealogy – Photo Forensics of Old Family Photographs
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday April 19 at 2:00 pm\, you can learn about how to manage those old family photos that are an important part of our genealogical family tree. They provide a look back in time of family members and your connection with them. Sometimes we know the people in these old photographs are family but may not necessarily know everyone in the photograph. Using these photographs for genealogy begins with collecting them and then organizing them based upon the information currently known about the people in the photographs and associated facts. Digitizing these photographs allows for management of the photographs and their subsequent use in your family tree. \n• As part of the organization process\, David Lahrmann will review the types of family facts to be collected. The tools for digitization of these photographs will be reviewed and how these tools are used for viewing and identifying the details in the photographs to support their documentation and further research.\n• He will show a process to manage documenting the relevant details in these digitized photos like tagging family members you know are family. This documentation will help with eventually identifying unknown people\, dates\, and places. A few examples will be provided for demonstration.\n• While it can be a tedious and time-consuming process\, it is well worth the effort invested. It includes collecting as many family photographs as possible\, digitizing them so that you can study them on the computer screen and reviewing them against other photos and documents that have been collected.\n• It is also important to give your family members a copy of your digitized and documented photographs as they may provide additional photographs not in your collection. \nThis meeting will be “hybrid\,” being held live in the Kolping Cincinnati Klubhaus\, and online via Zoom. There is no cost to attend\, and all are welcome. Send an email to genealogy@kolpingcincinnati.com for more information the location and Zoom link. \nAlways check the Kolping website for any updates/schedule changes: http://www.kolpingcincinnati.com/Genealogy/Genealogy.html

SUMMARY:OGS Saturday Showcase: Virginia Military District Resources
DESCRIPTION:Join Linda Swanson\, OGS Librarian\, as she highlights some of the library’s resources regarding the Virginia Military District. This territory was bordered by the Ohio River on the south\, the Little Miami River to the west\, and the Scioto River on the east and north. Virginia used these lands as payment to  Revolutionary War veterans of the Virginia Continental Line. Many people\, from surveyors to chain men to business owners who provided supplies\, were involved in the process of surveying the land between the 1780s and mid 1850s. Several new abstracts and indexes can help one discover if their relative is mentioned in documents pertaining to the original surveying of the district. \nSaturday Showcase is a series of presentations by the OGS staff featuring particular resources of the Library and Archives. They are hosted in-person at the library in Bellville\, Ohio. \nVirginia Military District in Ohio
