Carroll County was formed on Christmas Day 1832 from its five neighboring counties — Stark, Columbiana, Jefferson, Harrison, and Tuscarawas.
The county was named for Charles Carroll, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. Originally, Carrollton was called Centerville when it was founded in 1815.
