Johnson is the Registrar General for the General Society of the War of   1812, a member of the Company of Military Historians, National Society Sons of the American Revolution, and the Swedish Colonial Society. A retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force, he is the author of eleven books on the Civil War and the War of 1812
